No fewer than 13 people lose their lives and 98 injured in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this tragedy,” declared the head of state.

The president reported that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Key Undertaking of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office ended the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental agenda for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both rail lines was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant growth of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were completed at an accelerated pace, defying expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently sparked persistent apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party urged an urgent suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was requested until the completion of a full technical review. The party declared that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."

In reaction, the national leader maintained that the train had been functioning in complete accordance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and operation of these strategic initiatives.
