Roughly fifty cars have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, as reported by police.
Automobiles, walls and postal boxes were defaced, occasionally with Nazi symbols, they announced in a statement.
Officers report they were alerted during the night on Wednesday night, when a resident noticed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish fluid.
The substance had been placed in the form of a banned symbol, they reported.
Officers then discovered numerous other smeared automobiles and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under regulations banning the public display of Nazi symbols.
Police state initial examinations show the substance was most likely blood from a person.
"At present there remains no indication as to its origin; investigators are presently not cognizant of any physical harm in connection with the occurrence," they stated.
Municipal representatives said they were working "to solve the incident" and have appealed to the community for tips.
A senior representative said the vandalism left him without words and had to be addressed rapidly.
"This event affects the core of Hanau and revives the wounds of the right-wing violent incident half a decade ago," he posted on a platform, referring to the death of nine people by a shooter targeting residents of immigrant origin in five years prior.
